Book Publishers (listed alphabetically)

Angry Robot Books

Mockingbird-72dpi-198x300

What they want:

All our books are “genre” fiction in one way or another — specifically fantasy, science fiction, horror, and that new catch-all urban or modern fantasy. Those are quite wide-ranging in themselves; we’re looking for all types of sub-genre, so for example, hard SF, space opera, cyberpunk, military SF, alternate future history, future crime, time travel, and more. We have no problem if your book mashes together two or more of these genres; in fact, we practically insist upon it.

Notes:  Will only accept unsolicited submissions during “open door” period.  Otherwise, you must have an agent.

Bad Dream Entertainment

432037_486442578094521_755757782_n

What they want:

Bad Dream Entertainment is currently accepting dark speculative fiction submissions for short fiction, novellas, and novels.

The dark side of imaginative storytelling. Worlds that convince us are real, characters who enthrall us just as completely as they disturb, and stories that we could never suspect (or perhaps even want to). We want to be taken on a journey that twists boundaries, minds, and guts. While you will see the words ‘horror’, ‘contemporary fantasy’, or ‘science fiction’ thrown around here a lot, these are far from being strict genres that we look for. We want anything that is willing to stretch beyond those conventions and explores new territory. From mind-bendingly surreal, to darkly comedic, we want something we haven’t seen before!

* Will also be publishing comics & graphic novels (will pay flat page rate TBD).

Length: Over 16,000 words
Payment: Royalties

Dark House Press

7042

What they want:

An imprint of Curbside Splendor Publishing, in Chicago, Dark House Press aims to publish neo-noir, speculative novels, short story collections and anthologies with a literary bent.

Neo-noir, fantasy, science fiction, horror, literary, magical realism, transgressive, crime, surrealism, and the grotesque. Everything we like has an elevated perspective, a literary voice, so whatever the genre, avoid the expected, the formulaic, the same old stories and voices. Memoir and poetry will be a very hard sale but we’re not saying 100% no yet—the same for YA/NA.

Length: We are currently looking for short story collections of at least 40,000 words (with 10-20% unpublished) and novels that are around 60,000 words, no more than 80,000. Word count will never be a reason we reject a collection or novel, it’s always about the writing. These are just guidelines.

Dark Regions Horror

drphorror

What they want:

Original novels, novellas, short story collections and anthologies of horror are welcome for consideration! Must belong in the horror genre (not all dark fiction is horror!). No reprints, no mulitple submissions.

We want scary/disturbing stories (this is horror, after all!). We do not want erotica or paranormal romance. Your story can have sub genres; thriller, crime, adventure, but the primary genre must be horror. Original ideas have the highest chance of publication. Classic monsters/rehashed plotlines/story arcs will be a tough sell if they don’t have something original going on.

Send us horror that is scary, disturbing, original, well written with believable characters!

Length: 18,000-80,000 words
Payment: $500 advance, starting rates of 35% net royalties paperback, 45% net royalties for ebook editions

Deadite Press

deadite

What they want:

We are looking for high concept cult and extreme horror. Books that once you hear about it you say, “I need to fucking read that!” The stranger, the sexier, the more taboo – the better. The ideal book we publish will scare you, gross you out, make you laugh,  and turn you on – all at the same time.

We publish novellas, novels, and collections. Word length is not an issue as long as the book is badass!

Dragonfairy Press

dragonfairy

What they want:

Dragonfairy Press is a member of the Independent Book Publishers Association. We are a small publishing company for fantasy, science fiction, and their various sub-genres, including urban fantasy, supernatural horror, paranormal romance, cyberpunk, and others.

We want manuscripts that stretch beyond the world as we know it. Don’t worry about sex, gore, or foul language. While we certainly do not require these, we don’t shy away from them either.

Length: Novels (50,000-100,000 words) & Novellas (at least 20,000 words).  Any manuscript under 50,000 words will be considered for digital publication only.
Payment: We offer a perfect medium between self-publishing and big publishers. We currently offer a royalty rate of 40% of the price received, higher than an author can expect to receive from a big publisher.  All of our novels are published in trade paperback and ebook. We recently entered a distribution agreement, and our paperbacks are currently being placed in brick and mortar bookstores. Our books are also available for ordering online.
