I’m sometimes thankful that my mom (who LOVED scary movies) was more than happy to let me scar my psyche. Like many of you, I grew up watching Tales from the Crypt on HBO. Unfortunately, I haven’t seen them all and some of the shows at that age I didn’t quite understand. I thought it’d be fun to have “Tales from the Crypt” Tuesdays here at DarkMarkets, starting off with episode number 1.
This episode was based on the story “The Man Who Was Death”, seen in issue #17 of “The Crypt of Terror”. It’s the tale of an executioner who loses his job when the death penalty is abolished. With nothing else to do, he decides to dish out some vigilante “justice”… or maybe he just enjoys frying people’s brains?
William Gaines and Al Feldstein wrote most of the early comics, occasionally eh… “borrowing” a few stories from Ray Bradbury.
Fans of the old EC Horror Comics should check out the modern day “Grave Tales“, published by Cemetery Dance Publications. Writers and artists might want to check out their submission guidelines.

The Brown household did not permit HBO for one reason or another (probably because it was an additional fee that my mother didn’t want to have to deal with), but my grandparents had it. I snuck episodes here and there when I could, usually during weekend visits to their house. I’ve been meaning for years to track down all of the episodes, and I had no idea they were available online. This is really awesome.
I also adore Tales from the Crypt! How did my Mom not approve of me playing Magic; the Gathering but was totally cool with me watching late night HBO?
Jessica – I had no idea either! I am always surprised as to what you can find online.
Lorna – Oh yes, there were way worse things than Tales from the Crypt on late night HBO! Did you happen to see that stripper shoot ping pong balls out of her vajayjay? Or that real life hooker that had all her teeth knocked out by a John? I also remember a crazy special on sex around the world. There were old people bowling naked, men being treated like babies in diapers. These things I watched alone in the living room while my mom was sleeping. I guess the internet is to kids nowadays what HBO was to us.
The Real Sex series was a mainstay of slumber parties at friends’ houses back in junior high. Oh, the education I received. Thank you, HBO.
HaHA! Great, thanks Jessica – now I know what show to look up next. ;-D
